IF you've lived in Southern California for a while, you've heard it before: The Big One is coming, one of these days. (Yawn.)

That's probably the reaction of most of us to Tuesday's lead story ("Southland due for shakes") coming from Pasadena-based U.S. Geological Survey scientists who say California is 99.7 percent certain to be hit by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake sometime in the next 30 years.
