Summary


RIGHTFULLY so, Temple City always did the small things well. It paved its streets, seeded its parks and provided dial-a-ride for its seniors. Even after the Great Recession of 2008-2010, houses in the middle class city retained their value, propped up by excellent public schools.

Then, about 11 years ago, the city threw itself head first into the choppy redevelopment waters and began to drown. An overzealous plan that included the taking of dozens of homes in order to develop the northeast corner of Las Tunas Drive and Rosemead Boulevard caused a tsunami. A subsequent plan for an ambitious "piazza" shopping center flopped - leading to the bribery and improper campaign contribution convictions of two members, with one case yet to be resolved in court, in the biggest scandal to hit the bedroom city in its 50-year history.
