At the beginning of every school year, parents are given a list of musthaves from the teacher. "Donations desperately needed: paper, tissue, glue, hand soap..." The list goes on and on.
Although I am aware of and appreciate the strife suffered throughout the world, why does it take events the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 for those with money to adopt a philanthropic attitude within the United States?
