Blue skies, sunshine, and a clear view of the mountains made it a picture-postcard day for the launch of the 75th winter/spring season of thoroughbred racing on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita Park.

More than 44,500 fans turned out, the largest opening-day crowd in 18 years. Up in the Directors Room atop the Turf Club, where Santa Anita chefs presided over their lavish hot and cold buffets, the buzz revolved around the upset win in the fourth race.
