SAN MARINO - After being turned down three times for state and federal funding for a new public library, San Marino decided to go it alone.

Using private donations - everything from $1 dollar contributions from two schoolgirls to $4 million from former San Marino Mayor Susan Crowell - the one-year, $16-million library project is getting ready to open its doors to the public on Jan. 26.
