KNOW what's scarier than a toy handgun? Cops shooting children who play with the real-looking replicas and legislators like Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy, R-Monrovia, whose child acted like the kid he is when it came to the toys.

Mountjoy's 9-year-old son made a mistake by painting out the fluorescent tip of his toy gun. When he took it into a fast-food restaurant, workers thought he had a real weapon and called the sheriff. Fortunately for the youngster, deputies didn't just shoot him dead, as have police in other instances. Scary, but a case where parental, not legislative action is needed.
