Letter to the Editor: Questions About Fire

Summary


An employee of a La Ca ada supermarket told me that the day the Station Fire started in La Canada Flintridge, several employees of the U.S. Forest Service were in uniform and customers in the local store. Alarmed and curious, the market employee told me he asked the Forest Service men why they weren't out there fighting the fire - it was in its infancy at that time.

The reply was that they "had been pulled off the fire because the fire was too erratic." My Webster's defines erratic as "having no certain course; wandering." But wouldn't that be the description of any fire?
