Q. My manager told me that I need to be more creative and come up with more original ideas. I come up with new ideas all the time, and he just shoots them down. Either he focuses on possible problems with an idea, or he says that he tried it before and it did not work. What do you think of his comments?

A. Simply telling an employee to be more creative is a totally uncreative way to foster innovation. And further, feedback that is based on personality rather than performance is particularly useless. People do not become creative because someone tells them to do so.
