It is hard to believe Ralph Shaffer is actually serious ("Law not too receptive to bullies' victims" Aug. 7). There is long-held legal precedent in our society that you can match force with in-kind force. You simply cannot respond to "teasing" and "shoving" with a baseball bat to the head. Nor can you respond to "water balloons" by throwing rocks.

You see, baseball bats to the head and rocks can kill. Words, shoving, and water balloons cannot cause any real damage.

Shaffer is a professor. I'm sure he sees a bit of teasing going in on in his classroom, even at a college level. Are you saying that the person being teased ought to be able to pull out a baseball bat and take a swing? What a joke.
