Summary


IT'S another September and the sixth-graders, each in their own lonely universe, walk across the huge campus. This year, instead of towering over the kindergartners, they were the ones being peered down at by seventh- and eighth-graders. No familiar teachers are present to smile at them and the friendly landscape of swing sets and slides has vanished.These students, now in middle school, are being pushed rather than cajoled into young adulthood, that fabulous, fitful time of life: adolescence. The boys notice that the girls they chased around the field last year are now wearing bras, and the girls hear the strained, squeaky voices of the boys and morn that everything has changed so quickly.

Among the students there is trepidation, yet, like the animal that tests the water, they feel an excitement for something they don't quite understand but are unequivocally drawn toward.
