Summary

Using the Los Angeles city firefighter training center as a backdrop, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger joined Mayor James Hahn and other officials Wednesday to campaign for a ballot measure to prevent the state from taking tax revenues away from cities and counties. The governor urged voters to support Proposition 1A on the Nov. 2 ballot to protect local government revenues in the future funds the state is tapping this year and next to balance its budget. "When I took office, I promised I would work with the people,' Schwarzenegger said as he stood in front of a yellow three- story training tower used by recruits to qualify as firefighters. "This is keeping that promise to end overspending.'

A coalition of local governments, including the city and county of Los Angeles, agreed to give up $2.6 billion over two years to help the state solve its budget impasse this summer. In exchange, Schwarzenegger promised to support a future ban on the practice.
