Facts On Gay Marriage

Summary

Re: "No gay marriage - for the sake of the children" (June 7): As a working social scientist, I decided to look into the three quotations Pastor Jim Ortiz attributed to "scientists who've studied this from Princeton University." I found that the quotations were actually from "Marriage Facts" by Monte Neil Stewart. Stewart supported these statements by referring to Marriage and the Public Good: Ten Principles, a public policy document from the Witherspoon Institute. (Although the Witherspoon Institute is located in Princeton, New Jersey, this document expressly states that the Witherspoon Institute "is not connected to Princeton University.") The Witherspoon Institute is clearly against same-sex marriage, but stated that "the social scientific research on same-sex marriage is in its infancy," "current research on children reared by same-sex couples is inconclusive and underdeveloped," and "until more research is available, the jury is still out" (Marriage and the Public Good, pp. 26-27).

After less than 60 minutes on the Internet, I was able to determine that the author's own sources did not provide scientific evidence to support his thesis that banning same-sex marriage protects children. This is merely the author's opinion presented as though it were based on scientific research. Readers can verify this at www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/jlpp/ Vol31_No1_Stewartonline.pdf and www.princetonprinciples.org/files/ Marriage%20and%20the%20Public%20Good.pdf .
