Summary
As a fellow educator, I was deeply disappointed to read Desiree Zamorano's op-ed piece entitled It's all how you package entertainment'' in Sunday's (July 18) newspaper. Her glib assertion that Reading is entertainment'' combined with the implication that reading is equivalent to watching television and listening to music not only misses the mark regarding the central importance of reading to language acquisition, but also promotes the wrong-headed notion that, in her words, Reading, like virtue, is its own reward.''
In fact, while virtuous, reading is anything but its own reward for school-age children. Study after study has found a co- relational link between reading and language acquisition. Any English teacher worth his or her "salt' will tell you that the most facile way to promote vocabulary development is through reading. Yes electronic media can play a role in promoting similar outcomes. But are they the proper ones?See the full content of this document
