Summary
I was dismayed by the article in the Tribune (Nov. 30) that cited a CNN/Money report indicating that the city of Covina ranked at the bottom of "best places to live in the San Gabriel Valley" in part due to below average reading and mathematics scores. The report stated that student achievement for Covina was significantly below the state averages in reading and mathematics. The data appears to be flawed.
The Academic Performance Index (API) scores in 2008 for schools in the Covina-Valley Unified School District: range from 708 to 851, with 800 being the state performance target. Our schools have made continuous and steady progress since the inception of this indicator in 1999. In addition, our schools have been selected as California Distinguished Schools 15 times with South Hills High School (selected three times) receiving its fourth nomination this year.See the full content of this document
