Another View: Child-Care Funds a Foolish Cut

CALIFORNIA critics carp continually about the state's anti- business climate, and a recent decision out of the governor's office only enhances that reputation. A few weeks ago, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used his line-item veto to cut child-care funding from the state's welfare-to-work program. In a state with a 12percent unemployment rate, it is inconceivable that the governor would risk throwing even more people out of work.

The governor slashed $256million that pays for 55,000 children to be supervised while their parents work or go to school. These aren't just any parents. They are former welfare recipients who have managed to stay off welfare for at least two years, but whose jobs don't pay enough for them to afford child care.
