Covina Police Officer Saves Drowning Dog
COVINA - A police officer saved a dog from drowning in a family swimming pool early Wednesday morning, officials said. Police responded to the 1600 block of East Ruddock Street around 1 a.m. after neighbors made reports of a dog yelping, according to Sgt. Gregg Peterson of the Covina Police Department.
Foundation President Files for Norwalk-La Mirada School Board
Jesus G. "Jesse" Urquidi of La Mirada, president of the Norwalk- La Mirada Education Foundation, became the fifth candidate to file for one of seats on the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board of Education. Incumbents Darryl Adams of Norwalk and Ed Hengler of La Mirada already have filed. Two challengers, business owner Chris Pflanzer of La Mirada and Margarita Rios of Norwalk, a Los Angeles Unified School District police officer, also have filed.
Attempted Robbery at Baldwin Park Yum Yum Donuts
BALDWIN PARK - Two armed suspects attempted to rob a Yum Yum Donut Shop Tuesday but fled after a cook took a swing at them with a rolling pin, officials said. At about 10:30 p.m. two masked suspects jumped over the counter at the donut shop, on the 3200 block of Baldwin Park Boulevard, according to Sgt. Darryl Kosaka of the Baldwin Park Police Department.
Pasadena Increasing Electricity Benefit for Low-Income Customers
PASADENA - The city's utility is increasing monthly assistance to low-income customers from $5 to $7.50. The increase is intended to partially offset an increase in water rates The city decided to increase the electric assistance rather than water because many low-income customers are renters who may not pay their own water bills.
Whittier City Council Suspends Business License Tax On Real Estate Agents
The Whittier City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to suspend collection of a business license tax on real estate agents. While the city has had the tax on its code for years, it's never been collected. As a result of budget concerns, city staff proposed an education plan to ensure that the 900 unlicensed agents pay the tax.
Baldwin Park School Board Member Investigated On Assault Charges
BALDWIN PARK - School Board member Sergio Corona was arrested in Fullerton earlier this month on suspicion of assault and battery, police said. The arrest stemmed from a fight between Corona and a 38-year-old Baldwin Park woman at a Mobil gas station on July 11, said Lt. Craig Brower with the Fullerton Police Department.
Mexican Fan Palm Choice 'Revisited' for Colorado Boulevard
PASADENA - A community meeting to "revisit" the current tree selection of Mexican fan palms for Colorado Boulevard between Catalina Avenue and the east city boundary at Sycamore Avenue in Pasadena will be held Aug. 12. The meeting at 5:30 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Center, 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., will help decide whether to phase out the Mexican fan palms eventually or keep replenishing them as they decay or die, city officials said. Re-Sentencing Continued for Pico Rivera Killer
NORWALK - A woman convicted of killing four members of her adoptive family will be re-sentenced Aug. 28. Monica Diaz, 25, had a hearing Wednesday at Norwalk Superior Court which was continued to next month.
Glendale Officals Vote to Oppose 710 Tunnel
GLENDALE - City officials voted to oppose a proposed tunnel project that would connect the end of the 710 Freeway to the 210 Freeway at Tuesday night's meeting. Glendale's vote puts it with La Canada Flintridge and South Pasadena as opposing the project, while cities along the 10 Freeway, like Alhambra and San Gabriel have long supported either the tunnel or an above-ground freeway extension.

Man Robbed at Azusa Bank Branch Atm
AZUSA - Police say a local man was robbed and beaten about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after withdrawing money from an ATM at Citrus and Alosta avenues. The man, whose identity is not being released, had withdrawn money and was headed back to his car when the assailant stepped out from the shadows, said Lt. Steve Hunt.
