Garvey Avenue Bridge Upgrade Completed
ROSEMEAD - It took nearly $12 million, the firing of a construction management firm and two years of construction, but the Garvey Avenue Bridge upgrade is now completed. On Friday, city officials celebrated the opening of the bridge, which extends over the Rio Hondo Channel and serves as the east entrance to the city.
Catering Truck Owners Vow Fight
Taco truck owners promised they would fight back Tuesday after the county Board of Supervisors approved a law that will make it a misdemeanor for the trucks to park too long. The new rules double the amount of time a catering truck can park in a commercial area to an hour, but instead of facing a fine, owners face the possibility of jail time for overstaying their welcome in unincorporated county areas. The ordinance is scheduled to take effect in 30 days.

Burglars Take Cash, Tv, Honor Guard Rifles From Legion Post
COVINA - Thieves broke into an American Legion Post 888 overnight Monday, stealing a flat-screen television, cash and vintage rifles. The Hollenbeck Avenue building showed no sign of forced entry on the front entrance, but the security company reported the alarm was disabled at 11:50 p.m., according to auxiliary president Michelle Fernandez.
AZUSA - A key development staffer is leaving this week in the midst of multiple, simultaneous projects and a sour economy. Bruce Coleman, who joined the city's staff as economic and community development director in October of 2005, will work his last day in Azusa on Thursday. City officials called him an integral part in making various projects, including long-awaited downtown developments, move forward.
Organizations Get Funding for One More Year
MONTEBELLO - The city will help fund local service organizations for at least one more year, but might come up short next year. The City Council voted to pay $92,880 in Community Development Block Grants and general fund monies to a number of organizations, including Rio Hondo Temporary Home, the YMCA, and the Armenian Relief Society, at an April 9 council meeting.
Driver Charged in Crash That Killed Two Passengers
WHITTIER - Prosecutors filed manslaughter charges Wednesday against a Pomona driver whose two passengers were killed after a five-car collision. In addition to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Eduardo Lucatero was charged with one count of driving under the influence causing injuries because there were additional victims hurt in the accident, according to Olivia Rosales, head deputy district attorney at the DA's Office in Whittier Superior Court.
